Incorporated: 1898
Population: 623
Total Area: 1.6 square miles

Though Newborn was incorporated in 1898, the area was settled around 1819 and called Sandtown or Cross Road.  In 1824, Newborn was still part of Jasper County.  The land for "The Village of Newborn" was surveyed in 1839.

The Palmyra Institute was established in the 1860s and became a focal point of pride for the community.  In 1909, it was reopened as the Newborn High School which has been renovated to serve as the Newborn Community Center.

Sherman marched through Newborn on his way to Savannah and stayed briefly there in the home of Col. John W. Pitts.

In 1913, Newborn was granted a new charter.  Newborn remains a small, but quaint, well-loved community by generations of residents and newcomers.
