Covington, the county seat of Newton County, was originally known as Newtonsborough.  Its name was later changed to Covington to honor General Covington who was made famous for his actions at Fort Recovery.  The city was incorporated in 1854.

Nicknamed the "City of Beautiful Homes," Covington offers tours of its many grand, historic homes that date back to the pre-Civil War era.

The CBS television series, In the Heat of the Night, starring Carroll O'Conner, was filmed in Covington, as were the initial episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard.  Over 55 films, including Remember the Titans, have been filmed in Covington, and the town continues to be a favorite for location filming.
