Oxford Charrette - Future Planning Workshop
During the Spring 2006 semester, 14 students
in their fourth year of a five year professional degree
program in Landscape Architecture completed the Studio's
first semester. The students main project was to
develop a master plan for the Town of Oxford.
Oxford College is expecting to double the student
enrollment over the next ten years and the Town of
Oxford is starting to prepare for future growth.
Recommendations
from Study:
●
Create a new town center focused on a new
central green space
●
Encourage Oxford College to build a new student center
and bookstore on the existing fire station and community
room site, facing the green. Included in this
project would be a new post office
●
Encourage new development within a five-minute walk of
the new Town Center to be compact, pedestrian friendly,
mixed-use development
●
Adopt the Smart Code, calibrated for Oxford, as an
overlay in order to enable desirable development
●
Implement traffic calming measures on Highway
81 to slow traffic and encourage pedestrian activity
●
Continue phased implementation of city-wide trail and
sidewalk project
