Oak Hill - Seeking Equilibrium in a Place of Constant Change

As the inaugural Charrette at the Metropolitan Design Studio, nine students went to Oak Hill to design for a creative solution to help guide the development around the Oak Hill area.

Elements From Study:

To be Emphasized, Enhanced and Perpetuated:

West side rural character is a well liked attribute for current residents

The assemblage of buildings and space at the intersection of Oak Hill Road and Hwy 212 should be maintained as a sculptural, functional and architectonic icon for the new Oak Hill Community

A new or revised sense of identity is needed for the area

Mill village design standards offer a hint at what new workforce housing can look like.  The mill complex and related housing and services in Porterdale provide many positive design lessons

Mixed uses, mixed income and mixed size should be the rule rather than the exception for the Oak Hill Node

Narrower streets are a good thing.  They slow traffic down, drawing driver's attention to their surroundings, and they are easier for pedestrians to cross

Infrastructure easements already in place offer cleared areas for potential nature trails and bike paths
