Multi-Use Trail System
The Newton County Trails Movement
In the early 90s, a small group of local residents began
advocating for a trail system extending from Atlanta to Augusta.
They registered as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization under the
name
Newton County Trails-Path Foundation, Inc., and successfully
secured grant funds to build a soft-surface trail at the Charlie
Elliot Wildlife Center. In 1999, the County included a
Trails Master Plan as part of its Comprehensive Plan.
In 2001
and 2002, the County secured funds from the Georgia DOT to begin
construction of phase I of the trail master plan to include bike lanes and widened sidewalks from Newton
County Library to the Turner Lake Complex. The County completed the phase
I in early 2005.
See below for Trails Master Plan update.
Local Trail Initiatives
The City of Oxford Tree Board and the
Newton County Trails-PATH Foundation, Inc has
built a nature trail in Oxford. The City of
Porterdale and the Newton County Trails-PATH Foundation
are currently constructing a second path in Porterdale.
Both paths are part of a 40-mile trail system indicated
in the Newton County Trail Master Plan. The trail system
has been segmented into phases, with some completed, some
currently underway and some for future development.
